Sensory Circuits
At our school, we use sensory circuits to support children with additional needs, particularly those who may find it difficult to regulate their attention, energy levels, or emotions.
A sensory circuit is a short, structured set of physical activities designed to help children feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. They are often recommended by occupational therapists and are especially helpful for children with sensory processing differences.
What Does a Sensory Circuit Involve?
Sensory circuits usually include three parts:
-
Alerting activities to help children feel ready and engaged
-
Organising activities to support coordination, balance, and focus
-
Calming activities to help children feel settled and regulated
Sessions are typically 10–20 minutes and may take place at different points in the school day, depending on a child’s needs.
How Sensory Circuits Help
Sensory circuits can help children to:
-
Improve concentration and attention
-
Manage their energy levels
-
Transition more smoothly between activities
-
Feel more settled and confident in the classroom
Individual Support
Sensory circuits are adapted to meet individual needs and are used as part of a wider SEND support plan. Where appropriate, advice from external professionals such as occupational therapists is followed.
If you would like more information about how sensory circuits are used to support your child, please contact the school’s SENDCo.
